What UKVI actually requires from your translation
The Home Office asks that any document not in English or Welsh is submitted with a full certified translation. Not a summary, not a self-translation, and not a machine translation — a complete document carrying a translator's certification. Here is exactly what that certification must contain.
A complete translation, not a summary
Every line on the certificate must appear in English — including headings, court references, registration numbers and marginal notes. Partial translations are the most common reason a document is sent back.
A signed statement of accuracy
The translation must carry a confirmation that it is a true and accurate translation of the original document. This statement is what turns a translation into a certified translation.
The translator’s name and contact details
A caseworker must be able to identify and contact the translator. Anonymous translations, or ones certified only by the applicant, do not meet the requirement.
The date of translation
The certification must be dated. We date every document on completion and reissue free of charge if your application is delayed and a fresher date is requested.
Visa routes that need a translated divorce certificate
If a previous marriage has ended, UKVI needs proof that you are free to marry or that your relationship history is genuine. Your translated divorce certificate is that proof.

Why UKVI rejects translated divorce certificates
A rejected document rarely means a refused application — but it does mean weeks of delay, and sometimes a fresh fee. These are the mistakes we see most often on translations done elsewhere.
Official stamps carry issuing authority details. If they are shown as an image with no English text, the document reads as incomplete.
A certificate reading 03/07/2019 can mean March or July. We follow the source country’s convention and write the month in words.
A family court, a civil registry and a sharia council are not interchangeable. Loose wording invites a caseworker query.
A neatly typed translation with no accuracy statement is not a certified translation, however accurate it is.
